Asafada School Nepal

Nepal

Project Overview

ASAFADA's design is grounded in practicality, resilience, and repeatability, created for remote, rural Nepal. Responding to an increase in unsafe construction practices due to the decline of traditional methods and lack of skilled labor, ASAFADA presents a buildable and durable alternative that can be assembled by small teams using a transportable starter kit. This system allows for replication from village to village, promoting local empowerment through accessible design.

Constructed using compressed stabilized earth blocks (CSEBs) produced on-site with the Auram press, ASAFADA ensures material affordability and low environmental impact. Its unique integration of brick wire reinforcement technology introduces horizontal and vertical steel wire ties within the masonry walls at regular intervals. This enhances the school’s seismic resistance, making it significantly more structurally resilient than conventional masonry, while remaining more cost-effective and faster to implement than full concrete frames.

Where structural safety is often compromised in rural construction, ASAFADA offers a high-performance hybrid—combining traditional earthen building with reinforcement strategies drawn from engineered earthquake-resistant design. This ensures that schools not only stand up to Nepal’s seismic activity, but also to seasonal monsoons, with raised slabs and integrated drainage voids protecting the buildings from flooding and water damage. The layout itself is communal and adaptable. Classrooms are arranged to create a central courtyard, fostering a safe space for play and gathering. Multi-purpose spaces permeate supporting multi-use programming. A kitchen garden adjacent to the kitchen allows students to grow and cook their own food, tying sustainability and education together in daily life.

ASAFADA is modular and expandable, enabling it to grow alongside its community. It is a long-term investment in education and resilient rural infrastructure. It isn’t just a school—it’s a blueprint for self-reliant development that adapts, protects, and uplifts the community it belongs to.
